SingularitiesSingularities

Che cos’è Singularities?What is Singularities?

Singularities is a representation of passing time: different moments and situations gathered into a single work.

In life we cannot do everything. We can choose something, draw its boundary and work on it every day, until it becomes what we hoped for. This is why the work does not fill the canvas: it concentrates on the circle.

Ten-centimetre circles at the centre of a white canvas one metre square. The circle is what we choose; the white around it is everything we give up to do it well. The Nodes recall the path already travelled and bind us to what is still to come. One canvas holds everything together: the Singularity, the first to be started and the last to be finished.

Da quante opere è composto il progetto? How many works make up the project?

The project comprises 101 canvases measuring 100 × 100 cm and 101 works on A4 paper, one twin for each canvas. Works 1 to 100 are divided into ten cycles of ten; canvas 0, the Singularity, runs through all of them. The Preparation works tell how the project took shape before it began.

You can see them all on The 101 page.

Il gestoThe gesture

Come nascono le opere? How are the works made?

Every day, one very light pass of coloured pencil. Nothing more.

Colour is not spread: it accumulates, and time remains visible. The first passes fix the memory of the gesture; the last barely leave a trace, as happens with experience. The system decides how many times; the hand decides how and in which direction. No two passes are ever alike, and two circles with the same number of passes will never be the same circle. This is the singularity: what remains unique within a rule.

Che cos’è l’archivio dei gesti? What is the archive of gestures?

In each cycle, nine canvases receive between 4 and 100 passes. The tenth, the Node, gathers them into a single canvas of synthesis: nine circles worked in the same sessions, with the same gestures. Canvas 0, the Singularity, runs through the whole work and holds a segment of every colour. The individual works may travel the world; the Nodes and canvas 0 remain, and keep its memory.

Every canvas has a twin on paper: the same time, left on a different material. Like a door opening onto two paths, the same choice takes different forms: similar gestures, results that never coincide.

Qual è l’ultimo gesto del progetto? What is the last gesture of the project?

The project lasts 876 days, from 1 January 2027 to 25 May 2029.

On the last day, the time of work and the time of waiting both come to a close. Every work receives the same end date and the author’s signature, from the first to the hundredth, up to canvas 0. Then one final signature, the only one that closes everything.

I numeriThe numbers

Ten, like the hurdles of the 110 metres, the race the artist ran for years: one after another, separate, yet part of a single race.

Like life, which keeps its rhythm in decades, Singularities moves in cycles of ten, and each Node binds the cycle it closes to the one that follows. Nothing stands alone: everything belongs to the same story.

The circle, too, measures ten centimetres: a detail within the available space, a choice rather than an obligation. It is repetition that builds the whole.

One hundred is the whole: the dream of living a hundred years, the century that closes a cycle.

It returns throughout the project: the 100 × 100 cm canvas, the circle one tenth of its side, one hundred sessions per cycle, at most one hundred passes per circle, one hundred numbered works divided into ten cycles.

Perché 101 opere?Why 101 works?

Canvas 0 stands outside the numbering because it contains them all: it begins with the first session and ends with the last.

Che cosa sono i Nodi e la tela 0?What are the Nodes and canvas 0?

Each Node gathers the works of its cycle into nine circles, worked in the same sessions and with the same gesture. It is the synthesis of the cycle: it contains, unites and represents them.

Canvas 0 gathers everything. It is the synthesis of the syntheses, the Singularity: the single image of all the time that has passed, of the life and the dreams that ran through it.

The Nodes and canvas 0 will not be sold. They represent time, the rarest and most precious thing each of us has; and just as time cannot be bought or sold, neither can they. They remain as the archive of the gestures of all the other works.

I materialiThe materials

Perché tele e carte? Why canvas and paper?

Every canvas has a twin drawing on paper, worked in the same session, with the same pencil and the same gesture. The same time leaves different traces on different materials.

Like life, which sometimes sets two paths before us: even when we stay true to who we are, one will never be the same as the other.

Perché la matita?Why pencil?

The artist has drawn with pencils and pens since childhood. In pencil drawing he finds a direct contact with the material: a simple, controlled mark that demands concentration and, in the slowness of its movement, stops time. Everything slows down, attention gathers at a single point, and everything else stays outside.

In its simplicity, the pencil is the most direct expression of his way of making art.

Quali materiali vengono usati?Which materials are used?

Tele di lino preparato di 100 × 100 cm, carta Fabriano Artistico in formato A4 e matite colorate Faber-Castell Polychromos.

Primed linen canvases measuring 100 × 100 cm, Fabriano Artistico paper in A4 format and Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils.

Perché questi colori?Why these colours?

Nelle sue parole:

I · Verde.
VIII · Rosa. Lei: uno sguardo sull’amore.
IX · Nero. L’ombra: chi non c’è più e resta.
X · Sintesi. Lo sguardo dopo averli attraversati tutti.

Each cycle is a colour, and each colour is a gaze: the people and places through which the artist learned to see. In his words:

I · Green. The gaze everything begins from: my own eyes.
II · Blue. The depth that is handed down: the sea in my father’s eyes, and in my nephew’s.
III · Brown. The earth that gives life: the women of my family, my mother, my sister and the woman I love.
IV · Terracotta. The track and the competition: ten hurdles at the same distance, cleared every day.
V · Stone grey. Milan and New York: the cities and the years of work.
VI · Ochre. The light that makes everything visible.
VII · Indigo. Introspection: what we see with our eyes closed.
VIII · Pink. Her: a gaze on love.
IX · Black. The shadow: those who are gone and remain.
X · Synthesis. The gaze after passing through them all.

I tempiTiming

Perché si chiude il 25 maggio 2029?Why does it end on 25 May 2029?

It is the day the artist turns forty. The signature on the last canvas, canvas 0, on his birthday, marks the end of a cycle: ten cycles of one hundred sessions close a decade of life.

Perché tutte le opere iniziano insieme? Why do all the works begin together?

Tele e carte nascono insieme.

Because they are a single work. A canvas from the last cycle does not stay empty for two years: it is waiting, with its circle already drawn and its place in the plan.

Canvases and papers are born together. Some wait to be worked, others are in progress, others rest after their last pass, until all of them have completed their path. They begin and end at the same moment, yet each holds different moments, experiences and places.

They are parts of one thing and always will be: even when one day they are separated, each will exist only because of the others.

Che cosa sono attesa, lavoro e riposo? What are waiting, work and rest?

The artist draws time and distinguishes three phases that every work passes through. Every work lasts 876 days, from 1 January 2027 to 25 May 2029: only the share of those days spent waiting, working and resting changes.

Waiting is the future. On the canvas there is only a faint line of colour marking the edge of the circle: the goal, the commitment, the desire. It will come, but it has not happened yet.

Work is the present. The circle fills according to the plan, one pass at a time, and time leaves a trace on the material that cannot be erased. It is the only moment that truly counts: it is life, now.

Rest is the past. The work is complete and waits for the others to be complete too. Like memories, it can be revisited and reconsidered, but it can no longer be changed.

The three phases shape one another, bound by a movement that never stops.
