SINGULARITIES

L’opera

The work

In life we can choose many things, but we cannot do them all. Sometimes we must choose just one, draw its boundary, and stay within it.

Singularities is that choice, made visible. A ten-centimetre circle at the centre of a white canvas one metre square. The circle is what we choose; the white around it is everything we give up in order to do it well.

Nient’altro.

Every day one very light pass of coloured pencil. Nothing more.

Colour is not applied: it accumulates. The first passes change a great deal, the last almost nothing, as happens with experience. The system decides how many times; the hand decides how. No two passes are ever the same, and no two circles with the same number of passes will ever be the same circle. This is the singularity: what remains unique within a rule.

All the works begin on the same day, and none is finished until all of them are.

Ogni opera vive tre tempi.

Every work lives three times. Waiting, when the circle is drawn but still empty. Work, when it grows one pass at a time. Rest, when it is complete but waits for the others. For every work the sum is the same; only the way time is distributed changes. The first canvas works at once and then waits. The last waits, and then works. So colour measures time: the longer a circle has been worked, the deeper it is. What began first is what has marked us most.

I coloriThe colours

Dieci sguardi

Ten gazes

Each cycle is a colour, and each colour is a gaze: the people and places through which I learned to see.

L’archivio dei gestiThe archive of gestures

In each cycle nine canvases receive from 4 to 100 passes. The tenth, the Node, gathers them in nine circles worked in the same sessions, with the same gestures. Canvas 0, Singularity, crosses the entire work and receives a sector of every colour. The single works may travel the world; the Nodes and canvas 0 remain, holding the memory of each one. Every canvas has a twin on paper: the same time, left on a different material.

L’ultimo gestoThe last gesture

On 25 May 2029 the last pass completes the last canvas. The same end date is written on every work. On the back of canvas 0 the text is completed, fragment by fragment gathered from the Nodes. Then one signature, the only one that closes everything.

Ten cycles of one hundred days: a decade of life, and the completion of forty years.
